NPC

From Wikilyria

A non-playing character is a being within the game that does not have a player controlling or influencing its actions. Sometimes be referred to as a mob.

System Controlled NPCs

These NPCs exist in all parts of Alyria, and usually feature a unique name. Examples would include Dr. Hyde in Sigil, or even the Judge of Rune. System Controlled NPCs rarely perform any function outside of the game environment, although there are plans to incorporate the lottery NPCs and the Gossip webpage of the Materia Magica site (http://www.materiamagica.com).

Player Controlled NPCs

Some NPCs are created by players, and exist in Social. These "bots" are usually approved by an administrator, although sometimes they may be sitebanned if they spam the server, or perform illegal operations. Legal NPCs have been known to schedule boat taxi services, or report system updates ingame. Other NPCs may simply be eyes in game, monitoring game events and reporting them to a central server, as in the case of AODojo's Auction (http://auctions.aodojo.com/) site.
